Doctoral courses
In addition to the scientific thesis, doctoral studies consist of courses and other elements. The scope of the courses and other elements shall correspond to at least 30 credits awarded for a doctoral degree and at least 15 for a licentiate degree.
All compulsory doctoral courses must be completed and passed for both the doctoral and licentiate degrees. For the doctoral degree, in addition to mandatory courses, mandatory components must also be completed.
Doctoral students and supervisors jointly plan which courses the doctoral student will take. You must include the planned courses in the Individual Study Plan (ISP).
Mandatory courses and modules
At the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy, some courses are mandatory for all doctoral students.
- Introduction to Doctoral Education (1.5 credits). The course is web-based and required for access to other courses.
- Introduction to Scientific Research (10 credits).
Instead of course 2, the doctoral student can choose the courses:
- Research Ethics and Theory of Science (3 credits).
- Communication in Science and Education (3.5 credits).
- Introduction to Biostatistics (3.5 credits).
Some courses are mandatory if the project so requires. This applies to Laboratory Animal Science and Radiation Science.
Laboratory Animal Science course
The course in laboratory animal science is mandatory for all doctoral students who will perform procedures on laboratory animals or have such an experiment described in their thesis.
The courses at the Disciplinary Domain consist of a theoretical online course available for different animal species and a practical part. There is also a supplementary course for people with an older (earlier than 1 January 2013) education in laboratory animal science, a so-called FELASA C.
Radiation Science course
Radiation Science course (1.5 credits) is mandatory for doctoral students who handle radioactive substances in their project. Contact the department's radiation protection manager for more information.
Mandatory elements
- At least one presentation (lecture or poster) at an international conference (1.5 credits).
- For the doctoral degree, a mid-way seminar or licentiate seminar is mandatory.
Courses taught at Uppsala University are registered by the department giving them. Other approved courses should be documented in Ladok by the department where the doctoral student is registered.
Credit transfer
Mandatory courses
Doctoral students who have taken courses at other higher education institutions, which may correspond to courses mandatory at Uppsala University, may receive credits for them. The Director of Studies for doctoral courses decides on credit transfer.
Courses that have formed the basis for entry to doctoral studies cannot be credited.
When applying for credit transfer, the following documents shall be attached and sent to kuf@uadm.uu.se:

- Schedule
- Course syllabus
Other courses and components
An examiner makes decisions on credit transfer of Swedish and foreign education or other activities within a subject at the doctoral level. The department registers the signed decision and archives it together with the documentation. The credit transfer is reported in Ladok.
Exemptions
In order not to have to take a compulsory course that you have already completed, you can apply for a dispensation/exemption from the Director of Studies for doctoral studies.
