About Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies on Racism (CEMFOR)
Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies on Racism (CEMFOR) at Uppsala university conducts, supports and coordinates broad-ranging, methodologically diverse and inclusive, as well as multidisciplinary research on racism, discrimination and exclusion.
CEMFOR was inaugurated in January 2017 as a result of Uppsala university’s ambition to strengthen research about ”integration, racism and discrimination”. CEMFOR offers senior and junior scholars as well as doctoral students interested in racism and other facets of discrimination and exclusion a dynamic interdisciplinary environment that is conducive to new research ideas alongside theoretical and methodological reflection and development. Our ambition is to further and promote individual and collaborative research initiatives as well as support future generation of scholars working on critical, interdisciplinary analysis of racism, discrimination and exclusion.
As a result of the above, the key leading concept that has been chosen as central for work at CEMFOR has been that of ‘the politics of exclusion’. The latter not only allowed the Centre to steer its intellectual focus and cover a wide variety of themes stipulated by its mandate (racism, discrimination, integration) but to also recognise that – while multidisciplinary by design – CEMFOR’s work needs to be conducted in a strongly intersectional manner. This could only be achieved if/when observing intersections and overlaps of not only the focal areas but also of a number of further regimes and scales of exclusion. For the above reasons, ‘the politics of exclusion’ has been understood at the Centre as not only, or solely, ‘political’ in a traditional sense. On the contrary, the political aspect would, in our take, encompass various, often social-wide and recurrent, strategic ways of enacting and perpetuating as well as normalising multi-faceted regimes of exclusion: in both historical and contemporary dimensions, at both collective and individual levels of social organisation, and across multiple fields of social action (politics, society, economy and media, in addition to state- and other institutions).
