About Uppsala Centre for Business History (UCHB)

The Uppsala Centre for Business History (UCBH) was founded in 2008 and operates in conjunction with the Department of Economic History at Uppsala University. Its primary focus lies in researching business and financial history to uncover insights into sustainable economic development and the significant role businesses play in shaping society.

The center functions as a vital hub within a network of national and international scholars and institutions, fostering interdisciplinary discussions on the evolution of the business landscape over time and how businesses have adapted to these changes. The overarching goal is to enhance our understanding of contemporary societal challenges and facilitate informed decision-making for the future. Research topics include the historical development of firms, market evolution, and analyses of historical successes and failures.

In addition to research endeavors, UCBH-affiliated scholars offer academic courses in business and financial history and undertake research projects for the public and private sector. Collaborative partnerships extend to universities in Europe, the USA, Latin America and Japan, as well as within Sweden. Governed by a board comprising representatives from academia and the private sector. UCBH researchers have received funding from research financiers such as the Swedish Research Council, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, and the Jan Wallanders and Tom Hedelius Foundation.
