Collaborations and partners

he aim of Uppsala University's strategic partnerships is to create long-term collaboration for mutual development and to enhance the quality of the university's research and education. They are characterised by their wide range of scientific areas and topics, including collaborations on personal mobility, education, recruitment and research. The partnerships also intend to contribute to further understanding of needs, and solutions to society's challenges.

Partnerships are formed with organisations that are of particular importance for the university's operations.

Uppsala university’s strategic partners

Uppsala municipality

The partnership with the municipality of Uppsala has sustainable community-building as a core collaboration theme, but also includes activities in other areas. The partnership was established in 2016.

Region Gotland

Focus areas for collaboration:

• An attractive university island
• Mutual exchange of knowledge
• Research and innovation

The partnership with Region Gotland was established in 2016.

Volvo Car Corporation

The strategic partnership between Uppsala University and Volvo Car Corporation entails activities to jointly strengthen and develop education, research and innovation. In the long term, the strategic partnership hopes to contribute to the recruitment of well-educated engineers and efficient research, with the goal that existing and future technologies shall contribute to profitable and sustainable growth and competitiveness.The strategic partnership between Uppsala University and Volvo Car Corporation entails activities to jointly strengthen and develop education, research and innovation. In the long term, the strategic partnership hopes to contribute to the recruitment of well-educated engineers and efficient research, with the goal that existing and future technologies shall contribute to profitable and sustainable growth and competitiveness.

The partnership was established in April 2022.

Hitatchi Energy

Focus areas for collaboration:

The strategic partnership with Hitachi Energy derives from the partnership with ABB which was established in 2015.

Letter of intent on cooperation with RISE research institutes of Sweden

Uppsala University has signed a letter of intent with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden – a network for Swedish research institutes. The aim is to strengthen Swedish competitiveness and growth through increased collaboration between universities and industrial research institutes.

The purpose of the agreement is to strengthen Uppsala University’s and RISE’s position in Sweden and internationally within common research areas. The agreement will also contribute to strengthening ties between teaching and applied research and innovation systems, and to stimulate students’ contacts with the business sector and the surrounding community.

RISE and Uppsala University have agreed on a few areas with good conditions for deepened collaboration:

• Advanced facilities for technology development, production and testing (FREIA Facility for Research Instrumentation and Accelerator Development, Ångström Workshop, UppTech)
• The digital society / Internet of things
• Energy and KIC InnoEnergy
• Health and EIT Health
• Nanotechnology
• Test beds for biological drugs, IoT and cultural heritage
• The Gotland collaboration / Sustainable Gotland

Examples of forms of collaboration are applying for funding for and conducting common research projects, organising seminars, recruiting and supervising PhD students, taking part in courses and training and planning, utilising and co-financing expensive equipment.

Our largest collaboration

Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital together train more than 3,000 physicians, nurses and other medical staff a year. We conduct world-leading research to create new treatments and solve the puzzles of serious diseases.

More than 400 staff are employed by both the University and the University Hospital. Clinical research has a turnover of around SEK 500 million and generates approximately 1,500 scholarly publications per year.

Uppsala Health Summit is a recurring international policy meeting on the challenges of healthcare in the world, and how we can overcome them. The goal is to enable research and development results to reach healthcare and patients sooner.
