Master's Programme in All-Electric Propulsion Systems

120 credits

The electrification of the transport sector is happening now. Do you want to be part of this change? The Master's Programme in All-Electric Propulsion Systems will help you develop expertise in electromobility and the engineering skills required to meet the demands of the evolving automotive industry. Uppsala University together with partners from the industry will provide a unique programme that offers specialised courses in electric vehicles.

Autumn 2023 Autumn 2023, Uppsala, 100%, On-campus, English

Autumn 2024 Autumn 2024, Uppsala, 100%, On-campus, English

If you are interested in how technology can contribute to the electrification of the transport sector, the Master's Programme in All-Electric Propulsion Systems is what you are looking for. By developing technical skills in the field of electromobility you will learn how electric vehicles work and study how the electric drivelines of cars, trains, boats and planes are built.

Uppsala University carries out research in the field of electricity, electromobility and renewable energy in close collaboration with the industry. You will get in touch with some of the biggest companies in the Swedish industry through study visits and guest lectures. During the programme, you will have opportunities for degree projects and project courses in industry and research groups. The city of Uppsala has set the goal to become fossil-free by 2030, which makes it the perfect place to experiment and develop new solutions within electromobility.

This programme will give you:

  • the technical skills to make contributions to electric vehicle (EVs) markets, charging infrastructures and energy storage for EVs
  • the possibility to program, build and develop prototypes in the facilities you will have access to,
  • a network of potential employers during the education, both in academia and industry.

Student profile

You are a motivated student with a good theoretical foundation in electrical engineering, physics and mathematics from your Bachelor's degree, and an interest in being part of a great change in the transport sector. You take your studies seriously, are curious and have great English skills. You are willing to collaborate with other students in project works and elaborations. After your studies, you are planning to work with electric drivelines for EVs in the industry, manage a team in consultancy companies, coordinate projects to guide public sector investments or pursue a PhD education.

Degree

The programme leads to the degree of Master of Science (120 credits) with Electrical Engineering as the main field of study. After one year of study, it is possible to obtain a degree of Master of Science (60 credits).

The programme aims to educate you in the following subjects:

  • Electric vehicles
  • Power electronics and control systems
  • Energy storage

In the first year, you will learn about the subject area, power electronics, electrical motors or their control, EVs charging infrastructures, and deepen your insights into current research and sustainability issues. In the second year, you will study measurement techniques, industrial management and electric vehicles, with the possibility to choose the courses depending on the type of drive system you are most interested in, such as buses, trains, planes, boats etc. You will have the possibility to carry out project works at the university or the companies.

The 30-credit degree project at the end of the two-year education can be carried out in collaboration with partner companies, Uppsala municipality, Uppsala University or Chalmers University of Technology. It is also possible to conduct a 15-credit thesis at the end of the first year, which will enable you to obtain a Master's degree worth 60 credits.

Courses within the programme

See the programme outline for courses within the programme.

Most of the courses are given by active researchers in the field of electromobility, which will guarantee you knowledge and understanding of the latest research. Some courses also have guest lecturers by policy-makers and from the industry.

The courses are organised with different teaching methods in the form of lectures, group exercises, laboratory exercises, seminars, project works and study visits. Final exams are more common for theoretical courses, although many teachers have continuous examinations during the course, such as group discussions and hand-in exercises. For more practical courses, the examination can be achieved by individual and group project works.

The programme takes place in Uppsala and it is taught in English.

The need for well-trained engineers and technicians with expertise in the electrification of the transport sector is booming - both in Sweden and abroad. Students with a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering are highly attractive in Sweden and internationally since the programme provides you with a new unique profile and set of skills, designed to prepare you to take the lead in the automotive industry.

After your degree, you can choose to pursue PhD studies or to work in the industry sector.

Examples of jobs suited for graduates of the programme:

  • project manager in consultancy companies - for instance, to support their customer's choices or evaluate the performance of different solutions in the field of green transportation,
  • design engineer in the automotive industry - for example, to design and develop drivelines for electric vehicles or programme electric motors' control strategies,
  • researcher at the university or research institutes - among others, to develop smart strategies for charging EVs, or to investigate the potential of different solutions in the field of electromobility and how to integrate those solutions in our cities,
  • project coordinator in the public sector - for instance, to support the municipalities in sustainable investments in the transport sector.

Examples of possible future employers:

  • Volvo Group, Scania, Volvo Cars Corporation, CEVT, Bombardier
  • ABB, Ericsson
  • Policy makers, NGOs, municipalities
  • Vattenfall, Fortum, Ellevio
  • Sweco, ÅF, Ramboll
  • Uppsala University, Chalmers University of Technology
  • McKinsey, Accenture
  • Hitachi, Ericsson

The programme is offered by the Division of Electricity, Department of Electrical Engineering, at Uppsala University (UU) in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry at UU, Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, and partners from the industry.
