The University Main Building has a number of venues available for hire for teaching, meetings and events. The largest is the Grand Auditorium. Further down this page you will find a seating plan for the auditorium.

Available venues in the University Main Building

In the University Main Building, you can rent both large and small premises. There is also an exhibition area here where you can have a reception or registration.

Seating plan

The building has an accessible entrance from the corner of Övre Slottsgatan/S:t Olofsgatan. The building is fully accessible, with lifts to all floors and wheelchair places in lecture halls and the grand auditorium.

  • A document camera is available to borrow from the service centre.
  • For every 500 participants in the auditorium there must be 3 fire safety guards.
  • The hall is equipped with lighting and sound system for speech and acoustical concerts. Contact the service centre for details on the technical equipment.

Parts of the entrance hall of the University Main Building are available for hire for events such as receptions or registration. The following applies:

  • Exhibition areas can be hired in connection with hiring a room in the building. In total there are 100 square meters of exhibition area available for hire.
  • Certain areas can only be booked together with a certain room in the building.
  • Tables are available for use in the exhibition areas.
  • For fire safety reasons, tables and posters must only be placed in specified locations.

Booking terms, rules and safety regulations

Before booking a venue in the University Main Building, please read the booking terms, rules and safety regulations.

  • The start time is when the organiser arrives at the University Main Building and the end time is when the organiser leaves the building.
  • If the event is to be held outside normal opening hours of the University Main Building there is an extra cost for staff.
  • Please provide as much detail as possible about the event and your needs in the booking request.

Companies and organisations must have written permission from Uppsala University for any commercial photography or filming in the University Main Building. Such permission is granted sparingly to actors whose activities and goals are in line with Uppsala University’s basic values. Private individuals are free to photograph and film in the building for their own private use.

To apply for permission to photograph or film, send an email to universitetshuset@uu.se. The email must state clearly:

  • The purpose of photography/filming
  • Which parts of the building that you wish to use
  • Who is responsible for the photography and a contact person on site

For use of the building outside normal opening hours there is an extra cost for staff.

  • No consumption of food and beverages other than water is allowed in the Grand Auditorium or any of the other bookable rooms in the University Main Building.
  • Light snacks and drinks are allowed in the foyer in connection with concerts, conferences and other events. The organiser of the event is primarily to use services provided by Café Alma.
  • Special permission from the Academy Steward’s Office is required if you wish to serve food or drinks from another company, see the code of conduct for the University Main Building.
  • In order to serve alcoholic drinks, the organiser must apply for a permit through Café Alma or the company being hired.

Cancellation by client

There is a 30 day deadline for free cancellation. If cancellation occurs less than 30 days before the booked date, the client will be charged for all costs.

Cancellation by Uppsala University

Uppsala University reserves the right to rebook or cancel confirmed bookings if required by events involving the Vice-Chancellor. The University undertakes to inform the client as soon as possible if any booking conflict occurs and to repay any costs that have been charged. The University is not responsible for any other added
costs or inconveniences that arise from the cancellation.
In unforeseeable circumstances such as war, riots, stoppage of work, blockades, fire, explosions or other occurrences that are beyond Uppsala University’s control, the University is relieved of all responsibilities stated in the confirmation and of any obligation to pay damages.

Booking of the Grand Auditorium and dressing rooms

Charges for use of the Grand Auditorium are per day or per half day. For half day charging, the booking must fall within one of the following intervals: 08:00 - 14:00 or 16:00 - 23:00. If dressing rooms are needed, they should be booked at the same time as the Grand Auditorium and are charged for per day.
Please note that preparation and finishing up time needs to be included in the booked time. Uppsala University reserves the right to revise prices.

Billing

Unless otherwise agreed, payment will be due after the event. An invoice will be sent out around the end of the month.

Additional charges of staff

If bookings occur outside office hours (08:00 – 17:00), charges for necessary staff will be added. The price for the Grand Auditorium always includes; one member of building staff. This also applies to scheduled teaching outside the regular office hours.

Costs for sound and light technicians, rented equipment and additional building staff will be charged to the client.

Uppsala University reserves the right to decline requests from companies and organisations to hire the University Main Building or part of the building. The purpose of the University Main Building is primarily to offer venues for teaching and events that are part of the University’s own activities.
