Development plan 2050

Based on Uppsala University: Mission and Core Values, Development Plan 2050 intends to strengthen Uppsala University’s position as a world-leading university. Our academic environments will attract leading researchers and students. Uppsala University will be a meeting place for outstanding research and education and a creative hub for local, regional and global development.

– Vision for Development Plan 2050

The mission of the Development Plan 2050 project is to develop guiding principles for the University’s future spatial structure and physical design. The plan shows that the University has excellent scope for ongoing development in both Uppsala and Visby.

Over the course of the project, clear development lines have emerged showing that the University has the potential for sustainable growth without geographical fragmentation of its operations. This will involve the development of a cohesive University area integrated with its urban setting rather than several different campuses, with more cycling and pedestrian corridors through green areas providing closer links between the various parts of the University and other actors.

Such a development will benefit the future University, in which interdisciplinarity and collaboration are expected to play an even greater role, while enhancing the University’s presence and visibility in the city.

Vision for 2050

The attractive city university – knowledge environments with tradition and diversity in an urban and living context.

Goals for 2050

Cohesive knowledge environment and increased collaboration

  • The University environments support leading research, education and collaboration, and can adapt to meet new needs.
  • The development of the existing environment creates proximity and supports knowledge clusters, such as the area for health consisting of Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala Science Park and Uppsala Biomedical Centre.
  • The environments are conducive to interdisciplinary encounters and cross-cutting collaboration.
  • The facilities are shared by multiple, mutually reinforcing actors, enhancing the areas’ attractiveness.
  • Different parts of the University are linked up by well-developed corridors and safe, multifunctional outdoor spaces.
  • The University has strong links with Ultuna and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and with learning environments in other places.

Sustainability, health and well-being

  • The University contributes to sustainable environments and lifestyles. The University’s environments encourage and support staff and students in healthy living.
  • The University’s environments feel living, open and welcoming, including for international students, employees and visitors. The facilities are in use for most of the day’s 24 hours.
  • The University’s environments are well adapted to a changing climate and their development takes account of the use of natural resources and the impact on natural systems.
  • In addition to serving the University’s academic mission, the physical environment also satisfies people’s needs for security, housing, culture and recreation, and offers support and services.
  • The environments offer opportunities for both seclusion and participation, reflection and recreation.
